A PowerPhrase a Week
newsletter background

Creative input

The short version of the story is that a company I've been associated with for 13 years dropped my PowerPhrases book right after I printed 15 thousand books based on their projections. That printing took place to compensate for 15 thousand copies of SpeakStrong that were printed due to a printer quote error that I didn't catch. I found out about their decision three weeks after they announced it generally, when someone called to ask if she could buy PowerPhrases from me directly since The-Company-That-Cannot-Be-Named wasn't carrying it anymore.

The song is inspired by United Breaks Guitars, but will also announce my next direction as it unfolds. And it's really about transmuting challenges into opportunities.

Email me with your thoughts. One approach would be to put an X by anything that breaks the flow or hits you wrong. Put a ? by anything that is too confusing. (Mysterious is okay.) Put an ! by anything you really like.

And I'd love to hear any and all ideas that could be useful to me and the project as it unfolds. Do you like the title? Are there concepts I left ou? Let me know.

The Right Path

Verse:
Ned found out on Facebook he no longer was employed.
Susie got her pink slip in a tweet.
When they asked for explanations, former bosses seemed annoyed.
And hid behind the corporate balance sheet.

Like them I got no phone call. No one cared to say.
Good-bye, good luck and we all wish you well.
It’s been a lovely 13 years, and oh, yes, by the way,
You now have 30 thousand books to sell.

Had they had the grace to tell me, an awful lot of trees,
Would still be in the woods where they belong.
They’d be making homes for chipmunks and swaying in the breeze,
But you would not be listening to this song... that says…

Chorus:
When the paved road crumbles and you can’t go on
You can ask why me? You can curse what’s wrong.
You can fight the dark or embrace the night
'Til the dawn reveals a path of light.

There’s a path of fear, there’s a path of skill.
There’s a path of shame. There’s a path of will.
There’s a path of golden alchemy:
With treasure that take time to see.
Problems are possibility,
When the paved road crumbles, it can set you free.

Verse 2:
Ned found leads on Facebook that he’s delighted to pursue.
Susie earns a living with her blog.
It’s charming on my high road and it comes with quite a view
The world is crystal clear above the fog.

It’s hard to be a victim when you’re having so much fun.
It’s hard to hold a grudge when you feel free.
It’s hard to be a loser when you’re feeling like you won.
And every day’s a brand new mystery.

Had they had the grace to tell me, an awful lot of trees,
Would still been in the woods where they belong.
Making homes for chipmunks and swaying in the breeze,
But now they’re in my books thelping everyone speak strong.

Chorus:
When the paved road crumbles and you can’t go on
You can ask why me? You can curse what’s wrong.
You can fight the dark or you can start anew.
You can find the path that is meant for you.

There’s a path of fear, there’s a path of skill.
There’s a path of shame. There’s a path of will.
There’s a path of golden alchemy
With treasures it takes time to see.
Problems are possibility,
When the paved road crumbles, it can set society free.
