Powerful Words for Powerful Impact: A Lesson from Patrick Henry

Give Me Liberty Or…

On March 20, 1775, The Second Virginia Convention convened to consider the tyranny and oppression of the British Monarchy. Many wanted to go along to get along. Patrick Henry did not.

As he took his seat in the third pew, he felt burdened by what he had to say. He knew his risk for speaking was tremendous – he knew he could be killed for what he was about to advocate. But his desire for Liberty burned inside him. He preferred death to cowering in fear of the British.

His speech was passionate. He asked “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?” And then he spoke the words he is so famous for: “Give me liberty or give me something else.”

Okay, you and I both know that’s not what Patrick Henry said. He needed powerful words to have the impact he did on his countrymen. And you need powerful words to have influence on your family, coworkers and community.

So when you open your mouth this week, remember the courage of Patrick Henry, and ask for what you want in a way that is likely to move others to share your conviction.
